PIONEERS LEFT TO REGRET MISSED OPPORTUNITIES IN BRISBANE DEFEAT BUT REMAIN ON TRACK FOR TOP-FOUR FINISH

The Peninsula Pioneers are looking to reset and regroup after a clinical performance from the Brisbane Pirates saw them slide to a 45-7 defeat at Pirates Headquarters.Despite the heavy scoreline, the Pioneers remain in 3rd place on the competition table and are still firmly on track to secure a coveted top-four finals finish.The match started with immense promise for the visitors. After weathering an early Declan Meredith penalty, the Pioneers hit their stride in the 6th minute. Star playmaker Romain Ntamack sliced through the Brisbane line to score a magnificent self-converted try, handing Peninsula an early 7-3 lead and silencing the home crowd.However, discipline and handling issues quickly allowed Brisbane back into the contest. A spectacular drop goal from Cobus Reinach wrestled momentum back for the hosts, before a Gerhard Steenekamp five-pointer pulled Brisbane ahead. The Pioneers fought valiantly, but a lopsided 7-1 penalty count and an 8-5 handling error deficit kept them pinned in their own half. A late first-half try to Seru Uru left the visitors trailing 19-7 at the break.The match took a further turn for the worse in the second half. Despite strong attacking bursts from Noah Hotham and Adam Gualter, the Pioneers could not crack a resolute Pirates defense, spending just 28 minutes total in the opposition half.The hosts faced their own setback when Pirates player Ben Dalton went down with an injury that will sideline him for 1–2 games, but the replacement depth of Andrew Ready kept Brisbane on the front foot. The Pirates capitalised heavily on the Pioneers' unforced errors and 40% possession share in the final thirty minutes, running in further tries via Steenekamp, Nathan Lawson, and Corey Toole to blow out the final deficit."The final scoreline hurts, and it certainly doesn't reflect the effort the boys put into that first forty minutes," said Peninsula Pioneers Head Coach Buddha Johnston.
